These High-Protein Caramelized Pears Are Delicious Served With Vanilla Ice Cream

Caramel Pears with Roasted Hazelnuts

Ingredients

Simple Sauce

  • 3tbsp


    butter

  • 1/4cup


    brown sugar

  • 2tbsp


    Frangelico(Frangelico is a hazelnut-flavoured liqueur; you could substitute amaretto or Kahlúa or simply fresh lemon juice.)

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Simple Sauce: Melt butter in a small pan over medium heat. Whisk in brown sugar until butter is melted. Remove from heat and whisk in Frangelico until smooth.

  3. Peel pears and slice in half vertically. Use a paring knife and/or melon baller to remove the stems and cores. Place, cut side up, in an 8- x 8-inch baking dish. Spoon butter mixture over each pear. Split vanilla bean (if using) in half lengthwise and place in pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until sauce is bubbly and pears are tender. Let cool slightly but serve warm with simple sauce and vanilla ice cream.

How to toast hazelnuts

  • Spread them in a single layer in a small baking dish. Bake at 450°F for 5 to 7 minutes or until fragrant. As they cool, their dark skin will flake off.
